There are currently no legal sports betting operators offering wagering on the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in the U.S. However, a n offshore sports betting operator will offer odds for the competition, marking the first time in the event’s 55-year history that fans can wager on its events. This year’s Special Olympics World Games, which will be held from June 17-25 in Berlin, Germany, will have 7,000 athletes from roughly 190 countries, giving participants ample reach as fans and bettors tune in. "Just like any other sport, we've created Special Olympics odds behind weeks and weeks of research,” said the offshore book's brand manager Edward Knight in a statement. “These are incredibly-skilled athletes competing on an even playing field, and our oddsmakers will give these World Games the same level of attention and respect as the Super Bowl."
An offshore book is a betting site that operates within the United States but isn’t licensed in a jurisdiction that has legal sports betting.
Users of the online sports betting site will be able to wager on six sports during the upcoming Games. Basketball
Cycling
Powerlifting
Soccer
Swimming
Track Field Is there a potential for backlash?
The Special Olympics World Games, which haven’t been held since 2018, are poised to draw the attention of sports fans with broadcasts on ESPN and its family of networks. The new set of eyes could benefit the offshore operator, as people are 76% more likely to watch a sporting event if they can bet on it, according to data provided by the gaming company. Despite the opportunity to expand the event’s reach, offering odds for the Games could spark backlash.
"We anticipate some negative reaction for our Special Olympics odds, but we've been doing this for nearly three decades and have proven that our offerings have an overall positive impact on the visibility of a sport," said Knight.
For now, there will be only one online sportsbook to offer odds for the Special Olympics World Games. BetMGM, one of the largest operators in America in terms of market share, currently has no plans to offer the odds for the event, a source told Covers.
