We start today’s podcast by talking about Sokushinbutsu - a type of Buddhist mummy that originated in Japan. It involves Buddhist monks practicing extreme asceticism to the point of death and then undergoing mummification after their demise. While mummified monks are also found in other Buddhist countries, particularly in South Asia where they are mummified after dying of natural causes, only in Japan are the monks believed to have induced their own death by starvation. It is commonly believed that the founder of the Shingon school of Buddhism, Kukai, brought this practice from Tang China as part of secret tantric practices he learned. However, during the 20th century, Japanese scholars found little evidence of self-starvation among sokushinbutsu practitioners. They concluded that mummification took place after the monk's death, similar to the practices in South Asian countries.

We then discuss the killing of Nahel Merzouk by a police officer on June 27. This killing sparked a series of riots and protests in France. The incident took place when two Paris Police Prefecture officers stopped a speeding Mercedes-AMG with a Polish registration plate on Boulevard Jacques-Germain-Soufflot, as it was heading towards the Nanterre-Université rail station. Nahel Merzouk, the driver, attempted to drive away and was shot by one of the officers. The two passengers in the vehicle fled, and Merzouk was pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m.

And finally, we share our thoughts on the bizarre and disturbing case of Rudy Farias, in which a Houston man who was reported missing as a teenager in 2015 turned up at a church last week amid claims that he was never really missing and that he and his mother had deceived officers over the last eight years by giving false names. Found in a disheveled state outside the Houston church, Rudy Farias accused his mother of holding him captive and abusing him while naked in bed and giving him hallucinogenic magic mushrooms. The case highlights the prevalence and seriousness of child abuse and neglect, the challenges of detecting and addressing such issues, and the need for greater awareness and action around these issues.
