Phoenix resident's car gets stuck in flood water

I have lived in 7 states including Florida, which floods all the time, and the only time I have ever been stuck in water was in the desert of Phoenix (Arizona)! While driving to work at 3:50am (on Sept. 8th, 2014) in the pouring rain I was cruising in about 6-8 inches of water until the road dipped and the hood of my car was almost under water. I slammed in reverse, but with front wheel drive it didn't catch traction, so I stepped on the pedal to make it to the gas station just 15 feet away... and the car went dead.
