Inexpensive Grow Lights to Jump Start Your Garden

I have wanted to purchase grow lights and start my seedlings indoors for many years. However, commercial grow lights were cost-prohibitive. After a bit of research, we have come up with the perfect inexpensive solution to meet our needs.

Seedlings can be effectively grown with inexpensive shop light fixtures as long as you purchase the right bulbs. Use a bulb with a kelvin rating of 5,000 to 6,500. The bulb should be a minimum of 2,500 lumens.

In this video, we will share with you exactly how we created our inexpensive lighting system to start seedlings indoors. We are hoping to grow greens in the winter using these lights but that is for another time

I am a student in Tom Bartels' biointensive gardening class. I am a huge fan of his gardening methods and am learning a lot even as a seasoned gardener.

Supplies to create your own inexpensive grow lights made from shop lights:

We started with an indoor/outdoor 5-tier wire shelving unit from Home Depot. I liked this one because it would be easy to hang the lights from and I could adjust the shelves to the height that I want them to be.

Trinity 5-Tier Indoor or Outdoor Wire Shelf – https://homedepot.sjv.io/DooMy

These are the inexpensive lights that we created to work as grow lights. We purchased the shop lights from Home Depot online so that we didn’t have to go out in the crowd.

Fluorescent Residential Shop Light – https://homedepot.sjv.io/2DD77

Grow lights should be at least 2500 lumens and between 5000K to 6500K. Home Depot wouldn’t deliver the light bulbs to our home so we purchased them from Amazon https://amzn.to/2Kx2Mue

We also purchased a surge protector - https://amzn.to/3avbXGl and to simplify things you may want to put the system on a timer using a device like this one https://amzn.to/2VC50iB.

Thanks for being part of the solution!
