I have used this reel for a few fishing trips now and I must say, for a budget reel, it does not disappoint. I was drawn to it because it is made by PENN, a brand I trust and love for their Saltwater gear.
One of the things I love about this reel is how versatile it is. It works great for catching Walleye, as well as other species under 20 lbs. Its exactly what I was looking for and can handle the different types of fish I target.
The overall quality of this reel is very good, except for one minor issue. The handle tends to come loose occasionally, which can be slightly frustrating.
However, PENN has designed this version with a cap on the opposite end of the handle that you can tighten to keep the handle secure. Even though it does come loose, this feature helps in keeping it in place most of the time.
I should note that I have other reels with the same set-up, and they tend to have the same issue with the handle coming loose. If this is a concern for you, I would suggest looking into the Penn Pursuit reel instead.
The handle tightens as you wind it, and it never comes loose. It provides great value and performance. Comparing the Penn Wrath, Pursuit, and Fierce reels, I have found that the Pursuit offers the best value.
It is the plastic version of the Fierce, but it performs just as well at a lower price point. The handle issue is not present in the Pursuit, making it a great option for those looking for a reel that wont come loose during use.
I paired this reel with a Tsunami rod that came as a combo with a Tsunami reel. Since I wanted to use the Tsunami reel on a different rod, the Penn Wrath was a good replacement.
It casts smoothly and operates without any issues. It also feels sturdy and well-made, giving me confidence in its durability. While the drag is adequate, I did notice that the action of the reel is slightly sticky.
It doesnt affect the overall performance, but its not as smooth as some other brands I have tried. Nevertheless, considering the price point, it is well worth the investment.
Lastly, I should mention that this reel was a gift to a friend of mine. They have been using it and have found it to be good for what it is. As the lowest-end Penn reel, it still holds up pretty well.
While it may not have the HT-100 drag found in higher-end Penn reels, the drag is still smooth and delivers a reliable performance. Overall, the PENN Wrath Spinning Fishing Reel is a solid budget option that offers good performance for its price.
While there may be some issues with the handle coming loose and the action being slightly sticky, it is still a reliable reel that can handle various fishing scenarios.
If youre looking for a trustworthy brand and a reel that wont break the bank, this is a great choice.
