Should we give to God even what we have to live on? Is giving out of one's surplus displeasing to God? In this passage, Jesus contrasts giving out of self-promotion with the giving of a poor widow who could barely afford to live. The contrast serves to show what total commitment to God looks like and reflects the foremost commandment to love the Lord with all our being.
