If your exterior siding has sustained damage, you can patch it with filler, but it has to be the right kind of filler. Any product intended for interior use will crack and wash out in short order, even if you paint it. Exterior filler must be waterproof, and it must be able to flex with the wood as it swells and contracts in changing humidity. Exterior spackling compound and caulk fit the bill, but they never harden and are consequently difficult to shape. The best filler for your siding is a two-part epoxy product that cures to a rock-hard consistency. From our experience this has worked well here in North Carolina - but check with you local hardware supply and or manufactures to ensure it meets you home needs.
