Ukraine soldiers win tank battle and storm Russia trenches in brutal fighting

Ukraine’s 79th Air Assault Brigade cleared Russian defences near Maryinka, in the east. The battle began with a tank duel that ended with one Russian vehicle being destroyed. Troops then closed in and used mine clearing charges to break a hole in the defences. Assault squads destroyed an ammo dump, and hit another Russian tank.

They then stormed a Russian trench system and killed at least four Russian soldiers.
Maryinka is a town near the city of Donetsk which has been fought over since 2014.
Ukraine has advanced in this area, recapturing areas held by Russia for the last nine years.
It marks one of the first times Kyiv’s men have taken back territory held for that long.
