Ayutthaya is a world heritage city. It was the Siamese capital from 1350 to 1767 when it was captured and destroyed by the Burmese. After being burned and looted by the invaders the city was abandoned and the capital was moved to Thonburi and later Bangkok.

At its peak it was a city of over a million people and was labeled the Venice of the East. Trades from all over the world came to the city in search of exotic goods to take back to their countries. The prosperity enabled Ayutthaya to flourish. With the wealth huge temples and lavish palaces were built.

After it’s destruction the remains of this city are still visible. There are hundred of sites around the island and off that are waiting to be explored.

The Historical Park contains the most popular. You can buy a ticket for all 6 for 220 Baht that is valid for 30 days.

These temples are:

Wat Mahaeyong
Wat Phraram
Wat Phra Si Sanphet
Wat Maha That
Wat Ratcha Burana
Wat Chaiwatthanaram

You can access them by TUKTUK, motorcycle, bicycle or private car. It’s a full and rewarding day to visit them all. I would recommend it.
