Should Christians observe the Sabbath?

Within Christianity, there are varying views regarding whether Christians should set apart a specific day of rest. Some Christians believe that the Sabbath commandment is still mandatory today and advocate for observing a specific day of rest, typically on Sundays, in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus the Messiah, or Saturdays, in keeping with the Old Testament pattern (Exodus 20:11). Other Christians interpret the Sabbath as fulfilled in Jesus Christ and emphasize the freedom found in the new covenant. They claim that Christians are no longer bound to observe a particular day and that every day should be dedicated to worship and rest in Christ (Colossians 2:16-17). When considering the Sabbath day of rest it is important to remember that the “Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27). We should therefore not be enslaved by strict adherence to the Sabbath like the religious leader who was outraged when Jesus healed a sick woman on the Sabbath (Luke 13:10-17) nor should we ignore God’s command to rest - for God rested after his work. May we be led by the Holy Spirit in this regard.
