Pope Benedict XVI or as his original name Joseph Alois Ratzinger, was born on April 16, 1927, in Marktl am Inn, Germany. Pope Benedict XVI was bishop of Rome and head of the Roman Catholic Church from 2005 until 2013.

Citing his old age, in 2013 he became the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415
