Marcus Tullius Cicero was a Roman politician, lawyer, scholar, philosopher, writer, and academic skeptic. He was born on January 3, 106 BC, and died on December 7, 43 BC.
His long list of writings includes treatises on rhetoric, philosophy, and politics. He is known as one of Rome's best speakers and writers, and he created what became known as Ciceronian rhetoric. Cicero received his education both at Rome and Athens. He was from a wealthy Roman equestrian family and was elected consul in 63 BC.
His influence on the Latin language was huge. He wrote more than three-quarters of the Latin literature that is still around today and is known to have been written during his lifetime. It has been said that later prose, in Latin and other European languages up until the 19th century, was either a reaction against or a return to his style. Cicero translated the main arguments of Hellenistic philosophy into Latin and created a Latin philosophical vocabulary with new words like evidential, humanitas, qualitas, quantitas, and essentia, making him stand out as a translator and philosopher.
The collection of 900 letters published after his death is probably the most interesting thing he did. These give a first-hand account of social and political life in Rome's upper classes and show how a sensitive and emotional man's feelings changed over time.
Petrarch's rediscovery of Cicero's letters is often credited with starting the 14th-century Renaissance in public affairs, humanism, and classical Roman culture. His works are some of the most important in world culture, and they are still one of the most important sources for writing and revising Roman history, especially the last days of the Roman Republic.
Cicero's ideas and insights about life have been passed down through the ages and still make sense to people today. Some of his comments about politics and people remind us that people are the same even though times change.
