Marcus Tullius Cicero, a famous Roman orator and politician from 106 to 43 BC, was born in Arpinum to a wealthy family. He went to school in Rome because his parents wanted him to have a public career, and by the year 70, he had become the most respected lawyer in Rome. In the meantime, he started a political career and was elected praetor for the year 66.
One of the most consistent things about his political life was how much he cared about Pompeii. As a politician, his biggest mistake was that he never gave in. As a statesman, he had more noble and selfless ideals than most of his peers.
Cicero was the best Roman orator because he had many techniques and spoke Latin well. He did what everyone else did and published his speeches, but he also wrote much about the theory and practice of rhetoric, religion, moral and political philosophy. He was a major contributor to the development of the Latin hexameter.
His works have greatly impacted culture worldwide, and they are still one of the most important sources for writing and revising Roman history, especially the last days of the Roman Republic.
Cicero's ideas and insights about life have been passed down through the ages and still make sense to people today. Some of his comments about politics and people remind us that people are the same even though times change.
In this video, we'll look at Marcus Tullius Cicero's life and work through some of his most famous quotes.
