The standard amount of salt consumption is about 2300 milligrams per day, equivalent to one teaspoon or 6 grams (preferably less). However, about 90% of adults consume more than this daily. Eating too much salt in the long term increases blood pressure and thus increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.
