Anti-Infective agents are a class of medications that work to inhibit the spread of infections by eliminating potentially harmful organisms. As a Respiratory Therapist, you will be required to have an understanding of this type of medication.

➡️ What are Inhaled Anti-Infective Agents?
An Anti-Infective Agent is a general term that describes any drug that works to fight the spread of an infectious organism. This class of medication includes antiviral, antifungal, and antituberculosis agents.

➡️ Types of Inhaled Anti-Infective Agents:
▪ Tobramycin (TOBI)
▪ Pentamidine (NebuPent)
▪ Ribavirin (Virazole)
▪ Zanamivir (Relenza)
▪ Aztreonam (Cayston)

➡️ When are They Given?
Tobramycin is often given to patients with Cystic Fibrosis. Pentamidine is often recommended as a treatment for AIDS. Ribavirin is administered to treat an RSV infection. Zanamivir is given to treat the Flu. Aztreonam is also given to treat symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis. Again, there may be other types of Inhaled Anti-Infective Agents. These are just a few of the common types that you should be familiar with.
