➡️ What is a Ventilator Mode?
A ventilator mode is a way of describing how the mechanical ventilator assists a patient with inspiration. The characteristics of a particular mode control how the ventilator functions. Understanding each of the different modes is one of the most important aspects of mechanical ventilation.

➡️ What is Adaptive Support Ventilation (ASV)?
It's a mode of ventilation that changes the number of mandatory breaths and pressure support level according to the patient’s breathing pattern. This means that it's a dual-control mode that provides a mandatory minute ventilation.

➡️ Here's how it works:
According to Pilbeam's Mechanical Ventilation (5th edition), ASV provides pressure-limited breaths that target a tidal volume and rate that is selected by the ventilator’s algorithm to provide minimal work of breathing for the patient. It monitors variables such as pressure, flow, inspiratory and expiratory time, compliance, resistance, and time constants to ensure delivery of an acceptable minute ventilation based on the settings that are entered by the practitioner.

➡️ These settings include the following:
▪ The patient’s ideal body weight
▪ High-pressure limit
▪ PEEP
▪ FiO2
▪ Rise time
▪ Flow cycle
▪ Percentage of predicted minute ventilation that is desired

The goal of ASV is to minimize auto-PEEP and work of breathing for the patient. This mode is capable of ventilator management in a variety of patient situations, including during thoracic surgery. Also, studies found that ASV appears to be a safe and effective mode for weaning from mechanical ventilation as well.
