➡️ What is ACLS?
ACLS stands for: Advanced Cardiac Life Support. It's an advanced form of emergency support that is used for the treatment of life-threatening conditions, such as:
▪ Cardiac arrest
▪ Stroke
▪ Myocardial infarction
The goal of ACLS is to achieve the best possible outcome for a patient under these emergency circumstances. It uses an algorithm with a series of procedures and techniques that help the medical team carry out life-saving treatment methods in stressful situations.
➡️ Some of the types of therapy that is performed during ACLS include:
▪ Intubation and airway stabilization
▪ Mechanical ventilation
▪ Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
▪ Cardioversion
▪ Defibrillation
▪ Chest tube insertion
▪ Needle decompression
▪ Central venous catheter placement
▪ Breathing treatments
▪ Oxygen therapy
Keep in mind that other therapeutic methods may be performed during ACLS — these are just some of the most common examples. ACLS is typically a group effort that is performed by a team of doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists. Each provider is specially trained and should have their ACLS certification while working in a setting that required emergency life support. If you or your patient has been diagnosed with a respiratory condition or are experiencing symptoms, as always, please speak with your doctor for medical advice and treatment.
