➡️ Abnormal Breathing Patterns
Breathing is a phenomenon that occurs automatically with no conscious awareness thanks to the autonomic nervous system. Structures within the brain send signals that control the rate and depth of breathing that occurs to meet the ventilatory needs of the body. Looking at the respiratory rate tells us how fast or slow a patient is breathing. Looking at the depth tells us how deep or shallow a patient is breathing. Ideally, every patient would have a normal breathing pattern with a normal rate, depth, and rhythm. Unfortunately, as you know, this isn't the case.

➡️ Cheyne-Stokes Breathing Definition
Cheyne-Stokes respiration is an abnormal breathing pattern that occurs when the patient's respiratory rate and tidal volume gradually increase in intensity and then gradually decrease, followed by a period of apnea that can last for several seconds in which there is no ventilation. This abnormal pattern is often seen in patients with a stroke, heart failure, traumatic brain injury, hyponatremia, and brain tumors. It often results from damage to the respiratory center in the brain which affects the signals that stimulate normal breathing.

➡️ Treatment
The treatment and management of this breathing pattern involves providing care for the underlying cause which, again, could be a stroke or congestive heart failure (CHF). CPAP and other forms of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) may be used as well to prevent nocturnal desaturations.

➡️ Other Abnormal Breathing Patterns
Some other abnormal breathing patterns to be familiar with include apneustic, paradoxical, biot respirations, and Kussmaul breathing. For this video, we just wanted to provide you with a brief overview of this topic.
