➡️ What are Aerosol Medications?
Aerosol medications are drugs that can be dispersed as solid or liquid particles in a gas that allows for inhalation into the airways of the respiratory tract. The aerosols can be delivered in the form of tiny powder or liquid particles and, due to their size, this allows for them to travel deep into the lungs during inhalation. Aerosol medications are commonly used to promote bronchodilation, relieve mucosal edema, and loosen thick secretions.
➡️ Types of Delivery Systems for Aerosol Medications Include:
1. Nebulizers
2. Metered-dose inhalers
3. Dry-powder inhalers
Each device has certain advantages and disadvantages for different types of patients. To give a simple rule of thumb: In general, an MDI or DPI would be the preferred delivery method as long as the patient is able to take in the medication using the proper technique. However, many patients are not able to, and this is why small-volume nebulizers are so commonly used.
➡️ What are Bronchodilators?
Bronchodilators are one of the most common types of aerosol medications and they're indicated to help open up the lungs. Short-acting bronchodilators are given for acute asthma attacks, and Long-acting bronchodilators are administered for the maintenance of stable obstructive conditions, such as COPD.
➡️ Other Types of Aerosol Medications Include:
▪ Corticosteroids
▪ Mucolytics
▪ Antibiotics
▪ Anti-inflammatory agents
