➡️ Bronchopleural Fistula Definition
A bronchopleural fistula is an abnormal connection between the pleural space and bronchi within the lungs. This condition most commonly develops after a lung resection surgery procedure in which an airway is accidentally cut leading to an abnormal connection between the bronchus and pleural cavity. It can also occur due to a traumatic injury to the chest wall and by certain types of infections as well.
➡️ Bronchopleural Fistula Treatment
Most bronchopleural fistulas heal spontaneously on their own. However, if it doesn't heal, it can have detrimental effects on the patient's ventilation and result in inadequate tidal volumes and a pneumothorax. This would indicate that a large air leak is present which can be treated with the insertion of a chest tube. A patient with this condition who is receiving mechanical ventilation should have their tidal volume and airway pressures monitored closely. If the leak does not close on its own, bronchoscopic or thoracoscopic surgery may be required.
