➡️ What is a Voice Assessment?
Voice assessment and listening to voice sounds during auscultation can tell practitioners a lot about a patient's respiratory condition. Normal lungs that are filled with air alter the transmission of sound and reduce the clarity and intensity of the words that are spoken.

➡️ Egophony Definition
When consolidation is present in the lungs, it causes the transmission of higher-frequency vocal vibrations which enhances the clarity and resonance of the words that are spoken. This phenomenon is known as egophony.

➡️ How to Perform?
In order to perform this type of assessment, you can instruct the patient to say the vowel “e” as you auscultate their chest and compare both sides of the lungs. Over a normal lung area, the "e" sound will be heard as normal. Over an area of consolidation, the "e" sound will be heard as "a" instead. While you're listening over an area with consolidation, the spoken sounds will be heard much louder and clearer than over an area without consolidation. Lung consolidation is a term that refers to an area of the lungs that is filled with liquid instead of air. This is a common finding in patients with pneumonia which means that egophony is a sign of this disease as well.
