➡️ What is a Bronchoprovocation Test?
A Bronchoprovocation Test is an important test that can be used by physicians and Respiratory Therapists to help diagnose a patient with asthma. That is actually the most important thing to remember about this test: It is primarily indicated to help with the diagnosis of asthma. You may have heard a bronchoprovocation study referred to as a Methacholine Challenge Test, which is the most common type. However, generally speaking, the two terms can usually be used interchangeably.

➡️ What is Methacholine?
Methacholine is a cholinergic drug that, when inhaled, causes narrowing of the airways in order to mimic the effects of asthma. As doses of methacholine are given, breathing tests are performed to assess the patient’s response to the drug. The test starts with a low dose of methacholine and is increased incrementally until there is a significant change in the patient’s FEV1.
