➡️ What is a Pulmonary Embolism?
As we briefly mentioned, it's a blockage in one of the pulmonary arteries that is caused by a blood clot that travels to the lungs from the legs or other parts of the body. It results in pulmonary deadspace which means that the lungs are receiving adequate ventilation but no perfusion due to the blockage within the pulmonary artery. It's important to know that this can be a life-threatening condition. In fact, studies found that a pulmonary embolism is fatal in one-third of patients who are undiagnosed or untreated.

➡️ Signs and Symptoms of a Pulmonary Embolism:
▪ Dyspnea
▪ Tachypnea
▪ Anxiety
▪ Chest pain
▪ Hemoptysis
▪ Cyanosis
▪ Tachycardia

➡️ Pulmonary Embolism Diagnosis:
▪ Chest x-ray
▪ Electrocardiography
▪ Arterial Blood Gas (ABG)
▪ Spiral CT scan
▪ V/Q scan
▪ Pulmonary angiography

➡️ Pulmonary Embolism Treatment:
The patient may require oxygen therapy up to 100% as well. Analgesics may be indicated in order to relieve chest pain and inotropic agents may be given to maintain circulation.
