➡️ Pulmozyme
Pulmozyme is the brand name for dornase alfa, which is a mucolytic agent used to help break up mucus in patients with cystic fibrosis. It is administered with a nebulizer, which breaks up a liquid solution into tiny aerosol particles that can be inhaled into the lungs. This helps improve pulmonary function by decreasing the thickness of mucus and decreasing respiratory tract infections. Dornase alfa works by hydrolyzing DNA that is present in mucus, which helps thin it out so that it's easier to cough up for removal.

➡️ Cystic Fibrosis
As previously mentioned, dornase alfa is most commonly used for the treatment of patients with cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a chronic, obstructive disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. It often results in lung infections and copious amounts of thick secretions that make it difficult for patients to breathe. This is why dornase alfa is often indicated to help break up these secretions. Cystic fibrosis causes an increased sodium and chloride concentration in the sweat glands, which explains why patients often have salty-tasting skin with this disorder. As the disease progresses, it causes malnutrition and severe weight loss.

➡️ Dosage
The standard dose of dornase alfa for adults when administered via nebulization is 2.5 mg once per day. However, adult patients with an FVC greater than 85% may benefit from the 2.5 mg dose via nebulizer twice per day. For the most benefit, it is recommended that patients inhale dornase alfa approximately 30 minutes before receiving airway clearance therapy. This gives the medication enough time to help break up thick mucus so that it's easier to remove.

➡️ Side Effects
Dornase alfa is effective in helping to break up mucus, but it can also cause a few adverse side effects, including:
- Chest pain
- Hoarseness
- Fever
- Indigestion
- Pharyngitis
- Rhinitis
- Rash
- Conjunctivitis

➡️ Contraindications
Dornase alfa is contraindicated in patients who are allergic or sensitive to the drug. Therefore, it should not be administered to patients who have had hypersensitivity reactions after taking it.

➡️ Mucolytic Agents
Mucus is a sticky, viscous substance that is produced by the mucous membranes. It serves an important role by trapping foreign particles and bacteria, which prevents them from entering the body. However, mucus can also build up and cause problems, especially in people with respiratory conditions. This is when mucolytic agents would be indicated because they work to dissolve mucus, which makes it easy to expectorate.

➡️ Types
- Acetylcysteine (Mucomyst)
- Dornase Alfa (Pulmozyme)
