➡️ What is a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft?
It's a type of surgery that aims to improve blood flow to the heart and is often performed on patients with coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is caused by plaque buildup in the bloodstream that, over time, causes the arteries to harden and narrow, which can cause a lot of chest pain and discomfort.

A CABG procedure is performed to provide a new and better path for the blood to travel to the heart, rather than through a blocked or narrowed coronary artery. In general, a CABG is the most common type of open-heart surgery in the United States. Even though the success rate for this procedure is very high, patients may still immediately come out of surgery in critical condition.

This is why it's important for Respiratory Therapists, nurses, and other medical professionals to have an understanding of this procedure. For example, it's the job of the Respiratory Therapist to make sure that the patient is properly weaned from mechanical ventilation after surgery in a timely manner. Doing so will increase their chances of a full recovery and decrease the chances of the patient developing VAP, which stands for Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia. We could go into much more detail on the procedure, benefits, and risks of performing a CABG, but we'll save that for another video.
