➡️ Auscultation Definition
Auscultation is a non-invasive procedure for listening to the internal sounds of the body using a stethoscope. The process of auscultation involves using a stethoscope to listen to sounds within the body to get an idea of what's going on with the patient. It is primarily performed to examine the circulatory system and respiratory system which means that a stethoscope is most commonly used to listen to the heart and lungs. With that said, auscultation is also used for the assessment of the gastrointestinal system by listening for bowel sounds. However, since this is a Respiratory Therapy channel, of course, we like to focus on breath sounds and the process of lung auscultation.

➡️ Stethoscope Use
A stethoscope is required for auscultation because it amplifies the sounds within the lungs so that we can hear and have an idea of what’s going on with a patient’s condition. When performing lung auscultation, the bell or diaphragm of the stethoscope is placed on the patient’s chest and/or back. Both sides can be compared with one another and the sounds of each lung should be compared as well.

➡️ The types of lung sounds include:
1. Vesicular (Normal)
2. Crackles (Rales)
3. Wheezes
4. Rhonchi
5. Stridor
6. Diminished
7. Pleural Friction Rub
