➡️ What is a Tracheostomy?
A Tracheostomy is a surgical opening in the neck and trachea that provides access for the insertion of an artificial airway known as a Tracheostomy Tube. It's typically indicated when a patient has a condition that will require long-term mechanical ventilatory support. A surgical opening known as a stoma is made in the anterior part of the throat, and this is where the tracheostomy tube can be inserted to assist with mechanical ventilation.

➡️ What is a Tracheostomy Tube?
As previously mentioned, a tracheostomy tube is an artificial airway that bypasses the patient’s upper airway and is inserted directly into the trachea through a stoma. The tube itself is usually made from silicone or polyvinyl material. By bypassing the upper airway, it helps prevent injuries to the tissues in the throat that commonly occur when an endotracheal tube is used.

➡️ Indications for a Tracheostomy Tube
▪ A patient who is unable to protect their airway
▪ A patient who will require mechanical ventilation for more than 1-2 weeks
▪ A patient who can’t manage their own secretions and requires frequent suctioning
▪ A patient who has a difficult airway or sudden trauma/swelling in their upper airway
▪ A patient where multiple attempts of endotracheal or nasotracheal intubation have failed

And when a patient no longer needs the airway in place, steps can be taken to wean them off the tracheostomy tube before it is eventually removed and the stoma itself can be closed. Again, this was just a brief overview of this topic. We'll be breaking it down in much more detail in future videos.
