➡️ What is Renal Failure?
Renal Failure occurs when the kidneys stop working or aren’t functioning as they should. There are several causes of kidney failure including the following:
- Congenital disorders
- Infection
- Lack of blood flow to the kidneys
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Glomerulonephritis
- Polycystic kidney disease
- Kidney stones

➡️ As the renal system begins to stop functioning as it should, this has indirect effects on the cardiopulmonary system. Here are some examples of how kidney failure can affect the heart and lungs:
- Hypertension
- Anemia
- Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
- Pulmonary Edema
- Acid-base imbalances
- Electrolyte abnormalities

➡️ Renal Failure in Respiratory Care
As a Respiratory Therapist, one important tidbit to remember about kidney failure is the patient's breathing pattern. With renal failure, the patient will likely display Kussmaul breathing which is an increased respiratory rate and depth, with an irregular rhythm. This is a labored form of breathing that is usually associated with diabetic ketoacidosis. So with Kussmaul breathing, the pattern will be: Deep and fast. For these patients, it's important to monitor their fluid levels and keep an eye out for signs of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF).
