There's often confusion as to what an "alternative setting" actually is in healthcare. This term refers to a nonacute care setting.

➡️ Some examples include:
- Subacute facilities
- Long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs)
- Rehabilitation facilities
- Skilled nursing facilities (SNFs)
- Patient’s home

➡️ Types of Care That is Performed:
- Oxygen therapy
- Aerosol drug therapy
- Airway care
- Sleep apnea care
- Pulmonary rehabilitation
- Noninvasive ventilation
- Long-term mechanical ventilation

These are just a few examples. Other forms of respiratory care can be delivered depending on resource availability. There are several advantages of providing respiratory care in alternative nonacute facilities. In general, this includes lower costs and more patient comfort. There are some important drawbacks to remember as well. If there is poor care planning and a patient is discharged too early, it can result in readmission to an acute facility. This, essentially, would erase all of the benefits that were mentioned which is something that we always strive to avoid.
