➡️ Chest Cuirass Definition
The chest cuirass is a shell that fits over the chest and is a form of negative pressure ventilation. It was invented in the early 1900s as an alternative to the iron lung to alleviate some of the problems that came with it, such as tank shock. The device only covers the patient's chest while leaving the arms, legs, and remainder of the body exposed to the atmosphere.

➡️ Disadvantages
It relies on an airtight seal between the shell and the patient's body. Otherwise, it cannot possibly work effectively to provide negative pressure ventilation. With that said, these devices have been used successfully to ventilate patients with diseases of the chest wall such as scoliosis. Another disadvantage of the chest cuirass and negative pressure ventilators, in general, is that they require an interruption of ventilation in order to gain access to the patient.

➡️ When to Use?
As modern medicine has continued to progress over the years, the chest cuirass and negative pressure ventilators were eventually phased out in acute care settings thanks to the development of positive pressure mechanical ventilator machines. However, they are still useful at times in the home care setting thanks to their ability to provide ventilation without the insertion of an artificial airway.
