➡️ Respiratory Therapist Credentials
Credentials are essentially proof that you have completed the educational and/or clinical requirements necessary to work as a respiratory therapist. In order to sit for the credentialing exams, you must first graduate from an accredited respiratory therapy program. Once you have graduated, you will then need to pass two separate exams:

1. Therapist Multiple-Choice Exam (TMC)
2. Clinical Simulation Exam (CSE)

➡️ Respiratory Therapist License
A license is required in order to practice respiratory care in all states.
To obtain a license, you must first graduate from an accredited respiratory therapy program, pass the board exams, and earn credentials. Once you have done so, you will need to submit an application to your state’s licensing board, along with the required fee.

➡️ How to Maintain Your Credentials
In order to maintain your credentials as a respiratory therapist, you will need to participate in the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP). The CMP is a program offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) that requires respiratory therapists to recertify their credentials every five years. There are three ways to do so:

1. Complete assessments or submit CEUs
2. Pass the previous board exam for your highest credential
3. Pass a new NBRC credentialing exam

If you received your credentials on or after July 1, 2002, you will be required to participate in the CMP program in order to maintain your NBRC credentials.

➡️ Complete Assessments or Submit CEUs
The NBRC offers quarterly assessments that must be completed by a specific date. Each assessment is basically a quiz that is designed to test your knowledge of the latest respiratory care information and guidelines. If you answer enough of the assessment questions correctly throughout a term, your credentials will be renewed, and you will not be required to submit CEUs. CEU stands for continuing education units. These are nationally recognized credits that quantity the amount of time spent in the professional development of respiratory care. CEUs can be earned by attending workshops, conferences, and other educational events related to the field of respiratory care.

➡️ Pass the Previous Board Exam for Your Highest Credential
If you hold multiple NBRC credentials and elect to use this option, you must pass the exam for the highest level credential that you hold. For example, if you previously obtained the RRT-ACCS credential, you must retake and pass the ACCS exam since it is your highest credential.

➡️ Pass a New NBRC Credentialing Exam
Passing an NBRC exam that you did not previously take automatically extends the credentialing period of all credentials you hold for an additional five years.
