USS Normandy (CG-60) - Cruiser - Ticonderoga Class

Ticonderoga air defense cruisers were launched in the late 1970s and constituted a revolution in terms of naval techniques and tactics.

As is usually the case with new concepts, Ticonderoga-class cruisers were among the most criticized ship designs in the post-World War II era.

The concept of long-range planar radar combined with an expensive computerized combat system was not immediately understood by Public Opinion, by journalists and worse, nor by members of the American Congress, who measured the power of ships by the amount of weapons that were visible.

With only two 127mm cannons and two double missile launchers, the Ticonderoga were almost "deserts" for the money they cost.

The main characteristic of the Ticonderoga cruisers was the AEGIS combat system, which was developed by the Americans when it became evident that the Soviet tactic to attack American ships in the Atlantic, implied saturation attacks, launching successive waves of great number of missiles and hoping that part of them will succeed.
This was the Soviets' anti-aircraft carrier tactic, given that the country's navy was never able to develop an effective capability to confront American aircraft carrier groups. That is why the Soviets tried to balance the "game" by replacing supersonic missiles with airplanes.

That is why the AEGIS system was developed in order to establish a defensive shield around the aircraft carriers, which would constitute the second layer of defense for the fleet (the first was the aircraft and the third the short-range missile systems. and CIWS cannons with a high rate of fire).
The various sensors, in conjunction with the combat system that gathers all available data, allows you to react in a few seconds as soon as a threat is detected and identified.

The hull of the ships is based on the Spruance destroyer class because the configuration of its motive system was considered to be adequate to accompany aircraft carriers.
The Ticonderoga were configured from the beginning to operate as a flagship, so they are equipped with a large number of information and communication systems, which allow to know in real time the position of the ships of a battle group, to concentrate received data, to process them and automatically send orders to other ships.

The qualities of the Spy-1 sensor system and the combat data management system, removed much of the work from the aircraft carrier's own patrols.
