Protesters gather in front of the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad on Friday, June 30 following the burning of a copy of the Quran by Swedish-based Iraqi activist Salwan Momika outside a mosque in Stockholm earlier this week.

Iraqi top Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called for demonstrations outside the diplomatic mission.

The Iraqi government strongly condemned Sweden for allowing a 'grave insult', which was authorized by local police on the grounds that the risks 'were not of a nature that could justify, under current laws, a decision to reject the request’.

Other Muslim countries including Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey also voiced their condemnation.
