The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia, written on 12 clay tablets in cuneiform script.It is about the adventures of the historical King of Uruk, Gilgamesh, and his companion Enkidu.

Together they journey to the Spring of Youth, defeat the Bull of Heaven, and slay the monster Humbaba.

When Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh undertakes a quest for eternal life.

The fullest extant text of the epic is on 12 incomplete Akkadian-language tablets found at Nineveh in the library of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal.

There is no historical evidence for the exploits narrated in the poems and epic.
