5 Dog Training Exercises you should do every day at home ...
1 Sit and Stay: Start by standing in front of your dog with a treat in your hand. Give the command "Sit," and gently press down on your dog's back end to guide them into a seated position. Once they are seated, say "Stay" and take a step back. If your dog remains in the sitting position, reward them with the treat and praise. Gradually increase the distance and duration of the stay over time.
2 Recall (Come): Begin by standing a few feet away from your dog and call their name followed by the command "Come" in an enthusiastic tone. Use a hand gesture or pat your thighs to encourage them to come to you. When your dog reaches you, reward them with treats and praise. Repeat this exercise, gradually increasing the distance between you and your dog.
3 Loose Leash Walking: Attach a leash to your dog's collar or harness and hold it in your hand. Start walking and encourage your dog to walk beside you without pulling. Whenever your dog stays by your side, reward them with treats and praise. If they start pulling, stop walking and wait for them to return to your side before resuming the walk. Consistency is key in teaching them to walk calmly on a loose leash.
4 Down Command: Begin with your dog in a sitting position. Hold a treat in your hand and lower it to the ground in front of them while giving the command "Down." Gently guide your dog's front legs forward as they lower their body into a lying position. Once they are in the down position, reward them with the treat and praise. Gradually phase out the hand gesture and treat, relying solely on the verbal command.
5 Leave It: Hold a treat in your closed hand and present it to your dog, saying "Leave it" firmly. Your dog may try to sniff, paw, or lick your hand to get the treat. Ignore these attempts and wait for a brief moment of disinterest. As soon as they divert their attention away from your hand, reward them with a different treat from your other hand and praise them. Repeat this exercise, gradually increasing the difficulty by using different items to "leave."
Remember to be patient and consistent while training your dog. These exercises should be done in short sessions of 5 to 10 minutes each, several times a day. Over time, your dog will learn and improve their behavior through regular practice and positive reinforcement.
