How to Locate Crappie before Winter (Early Ice)

How to find Crappie before winter or the early ice fishing season doesn't have to be difficult. Crappie will school up on the structural transition of hard bottom (rocks, gravel, sand) and soft bottom (mud, muck, silt) during the fall, and then move out toward the deeper basins and suspend during the winter months. During late fall or early ice season, crappie can be found either on this transition line or slightly pushed out into the mud/silt basins. You can use your sonar to find the hard/soft bottom transition and find where these schools of crappie will be for the next few weeks during ice up!
