Professor of Trade Policy at Cornell University, Eswar Prasad spoke at 'Summer Davos' in Tianjin, 28 June 2023, about Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). He understands their dangers but his concern is not for people, rather for the central banks, who need to maintain their "integrity and independence".

Programmable currency has the ability to limit savings capacity, and control what is spent, where it is spent, who spends it, how they spend it and when they spend it. The intent is to phase out cash, which can be used independently and anonymously. CBDCs ensure the bankers have control of human activity.
