The church was built in the first half of the 17th century. In mannerist and baroque style, it features a Latin cross plan. Its interior is decorated with carvings and tiles (azulejos).

It is a very large temple, on the corner of Rua do Carmo and Rua José Espregueira. It is part of the Carmelitas Descalças Convent. The church is located on the outskirts of the historic center, across the train tracks, near the underpass.
