I recently purchased the Daiwa Saltist Star Drag High Speed Reel and I am impressed with its small, light, and fast design. Its perfect for bombing and burning back surface Iron, and even for yo-yo fishing.
I paired it with a Phenix M1 Inshore 20-45 8’2” rod and 40lb J-Braid, and it worked like a charm. This is actually my second Saltist reel and I use it specifically for fishing in the New York Bight area, catching stripers and blue fish.
It has a nice smooth casting and the retrieve is faster compared to my gold Saltist 20h reel. One of the best things about this reel is its smooth drag.
I use it with 25 lb. mono on my 7 St. Croix TideMaster inshore casting rod, and Ive caught bluefish over 20lbs and stripers over 30lbs using this combination.
As far as I can tell, this reel seems to be a newer version of the Saltist B&G, but with new colors and handles for about $20 more. The drag and gear ratio is still the same, as well as the available sizes.
I use this reel for everything from live baiting for cobia and striper to trolling for mackerel and tuna offshore. The clicker is nice and loud, and the new handles are soft, allowing me to get more power with less resistance than the old football knob.
I did receive one defective reel that was missing the bag of goodies with the reel seat clamp and maintenance tool, but I managed to get it replaced by ordering 5.
This reel can spool up to 500 yards of 65lb Grand J-braid, which is the same as my old Saltist.
The only downside to this reel is that for the same price, you can get a Penn Fathom 40nld Lever Drag with the same line capacity, but with more drag and a bit faster gear ratio.
Overall, I would highly recommend the Daiwa Saltist Star Drag High Speed Reel to anyone in the market for a reliable, smooth-dragging, and versatile reel.
