Chief William Alchesay (1853-1928) was a prominent Native American leader and military scout from the White Mountain Apache Tribe. He was born in the White Mountains of present-day Arizona. Alchesay gained recognition for his bravery and leadership during the Apache Wars in the late 19th century.

Alchesay served as a scout for the United States Army, providing invaluable assistance in tracking and engaging hostile Apache groups. He demonstrated exceptional skill in navigating the rugged terrain and had extensive knowledge of Apache culture and tactics, which greatly contributed to the success of military operations.

In 1872, Alchesay was one of the few Apache scouts to receive the Medal of Honor, the highest military honor in the United States, for his actions during the Battle of Big Dry Wash. He continued to serve as a scout during subsequent conflicts, including the Geronimo Campaign, where his expertise was highly respected.

Following the conflicts, Chief Alchesay played a crucial role in advocating for the rights of Native Americans and promoting peace between tribes and the U.S. government. He became a prominent leader within the White Mountain Apache Tribe, serving as a tribal chairman and working to improve the living conditions and opportunities for his people.

Chief William Alchesay's legacy continues to inspire and symbolize the resilience and strength of Native American leaders who navigated the complexities of their time while working towards the betterment of their communities.
