Armature For Dynamic Animal Sculpture

This is an advanced method for creating a pattern for the armature for an animal sculpture. Unlike the cardboard patterns I normally use, this one can be twisted along the spine to create a sculpture in a realistic, dynamic posture. You can also bend the leg patterns at the joints, but there's still a cardboard pattern that prevents the 'bones' from bending in the wrong place.

This method should only be used if you're already familiar with using a pattern inside an animal sculpture, and if you're comfortable with the idea of making a pattern of your own based on a photo or sketch.

You can find the book I mentioned, Make Animal Sculptures With Paper Mache, here: http://amzn.to/1nMUO3a
Some of the projects on my sculpture pattern page also use a cardboard pattern on the inside. You can see them here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns

And you can find that post about making a poseable hand armature here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/poseable-hand-armature-for-paper-mache-clay

The cardboard patterns are great for most animal sculptures, but if the spine needs to bend, like the cougar pattern in the video or a puppy playing on his back, this new foil pattern works better. The foil can be twisted and turned in a way that cardboard can't. You'll still want to use a lot of photo references when you make your pattern and when you fill out the forms, so your final sculpture will be realistic.

If you make a new pattern using this new method, let us know what you think.
