Was the 202X (gaming) GPU slump INEVITABLE regardless of prices?

Even if the prices weren't absurd...was there REALLY a compelling argument to buy a new gpu anyway? Assuming you had something from the rtx 20-series era or very high end gtx 10-series card like the 1080ti.
