I used to be a keen runner and in an attempt to ease myself back onto the road I decided to buy a treadmill. I wanted one that was not too large nor too expensive but that would be powerful enough for some serious use. This treadmill from Costway, one of a range of similarly priced and similarly specified models, seemed to fit the bill and at £299 was not too dear.
As to be expected, at 34kg it is a good weight but is designed to fold flat and will fit under a bed or behind a sofa and has wheels to aid movement. The running area is 100 x 40cm and is big enough for normal use although wider would be better. It has a folding handrest bar with a touch panel control screen built in. When the armrest is in the elevated position the 2.25 horsepower treadmill will operate at a maximum speed of 12kmh, when lowered it restricts the speed to a brisk walking pace of 4kmh. The speed can be finely adjusted with 10 steps between each kmh. There is a LED screen on the treadmill itself which scrolls through time, distance and calorie consumption. The treadmill has a built-in Bluetooth speaker and can interface with the Gymax app to track exercise sessions. It comes with a simple remote control and has a magnetic emergency cord. On the top of the handrest bar is a mount for a phone holder, which is fine for a phone but too small for a tablet.
To use in running mode, lift the armrest bar up and lock it in position using the metal handle on the base. Connect the magnetic emergency cord to the underside of the armrest bar, plug the power lead into the port on the right side of the treadmill and turn it on with the switch next to it. The LED screen will light up and a loud chime will sound. If the emergency cord is not connected or if there is another problem an error message will show on the screen. Then start the treadmill using the power button on the armrest or with the remote control and press the plus and minus buttons to select a speed.
To use in walking mode, just keep the armrest lowered and switch on as before. The speed will be restricted and the emergency cord is not required.
The treadmill itself works well, better than I expected. I have never yet used it beyond the 10 kmph level and use it for fast walking at around 6.5 kmph with occasional runs at 9.5. The LED screen on the treadmill base is easy to see when running although I find the calorie usage estimates to be very different from those calculated on my sports watch. The colour display on the armrest is OK although perhaps more for looks than use. The power and speed control buttons are located there too. The Gymax app is OK and does record the sessions automatically but is poorly designed and hard to read.
The main criticism I have of this treadmill is of the build quality. The shell of the device is made from ABS plastic with an attractive bright finish, but after just a few days of use, mine has already become badly scratched. The bodywork feels lightweight and other users have complained of it breaking and bits snapping off. Part of the problem is due to the heavy weight of the device itself which the plastic shell cannot properly support. You have to take great care when moving the treadmill, when operating the locking handle for the armrest, and when unplugging the mains cord.
That said the treadmill does exceed my expectations in use, it is not too noisy (although avoid using it upstairs if you can), supports a heavier user than many rivals, and operates at a higher running speed than I expected. Storage is pretty easy with the 132 cm long treadmill being just 12cm deep making it suitable for under the bed or behind the door storage.
If you need a compact-sized, inexpensive treadmill then you will do well to find a better one than this for under £300.
