Jack Parsons, born Marvel Whiteside Parsons in 1914, was an American rocket engineer and occultist known for his significant contributions to early rocket propulsion research. While Parsons made notable advancements in science, he was also involved in occult practices, which led to his association with dark or unconventional branches of science.

Parsons had a deep interest in the occult and was a member of several occult organizations, including the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO) and the Agape Lodge. He practiced rituals and ceremonies influenced by Aleister Crowley's Thelema, a religious and philosophical system. Parsons believed in the fusion of science and spirituality, seeking to explore the unknown realms through both avenues.

In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Parsons, along with his colleagues, developed groundbreaking advancements in solid rocket propellants. He played a crucial role in the formation of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Aerojet Engineering Corporation, which became pivotal institutions in the field of rocketry.

Parsons' involvement in the occult, particularly his association with L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, caused controversy and strained his professional relationships. His unorthodox beliefs and practices, combined with his unconventional personal life, led to difficulties within the scientific community.

Tragically, Parsons died in an explosion at his home laboratory in 1952, under mysterious circumstances. While his contributions to rocket science are undeniable, his involvement in occultism and the esoteric aspects of his life have also left a lasting impact on his legacy. Some regard him as an intriguing figure who straddled the worlds of science and mysticism, while others view his occult practices as detracting from his scientific achievements.
