Instead of just comparing the RC Plane modeled after the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II to some of the UMX models I had handy like the E-flite UMX B-25, E-flite UMX Habu, E-flite UMX MIG-15, E-flite UMX P-51 Mustang, and the E-flite UMX J-3 Cub, I actually flew it. I also showed how poorly the landing gear performs.
Here are my pros and cons for this UMX A-10 EDF Jet:
Pros:
- It looks incredibly scale
- Twin 28mm Ducted Fans with 13,500Kv Brushless Motors
- 4-Channel control
- Top mounted magnetic hatch battery bay
Cons:
- Pathetically weak front landing gear
- Has a very tough time binding properly
- The fans sound off
- Customary UMX foam dents
- Very smelly foam like always with Horizon Hobby UMX planes
- The thing will not bind very easy and keeping a bind is also a challenge.
The only reason it got off the ground is because of the 850 Babble Batt I was using and it can be purchased here: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1540831-BabbelBatts
Here is how Horizon Hobby describes it:
"Unlike stealth aircraft that take out enemies anonymously or from a distance, the A-10 Warthog is designed to get up close and personal with its targets. Its mere appearance over the battlefield is enough to send most enemy ground forces running for cover, especially if they've ever gotten a taste of its 30mm nose cannon - a weapon so powerful, it can shred through the armor of a tank with a single burst. This awesome firepower, combined with its ability to turn on a dime and stay on station while taking enormous amounts of damage, has made the A-10 America's premier close air support fighter for over 40 years.
With the UMX A10, you can finally enjoy an ultra micro RC replica of the mighty Warthog that does its legend justice. It perfectly blends scale detail with an abundance of power, crisp control response and AS3X® stability to give you one of the most exciting EDF experiences of any size.
Twin 28mm Ducted Fans with Powerful 13,500Kv Brushless Motors
This remarkably efficient power system delivers exhilarating speed and climb performance as well as generous flight times of up to 5 -7 minutes when powered by the recommended 800mAh 2S flight battery (sold separately)."
Here is some history on this plane:
The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single–seat, twin turbofan engine, straight wing jet aircraft developed by Fairchild-Republic for the United States Air Force (USAF). Commonly referred to by its nicknames Warthog or Hog, its official name comes from the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, a World War II fighter that was effective at attacking ground targets. The A-10 was designed for close-in support of ground troops, close air support (CAS), and providing quick-action support for troops against helicopters and ground forces. It entered service in 1976 and is the only production-built aircraft that has served in the USAF that was designed solely for CAS. Its secondary mission is to provide forward air controller – airborne (FAC-A) support, by directing other aircraft in attacks on ground targets. Aircraft used primarily in this role are designated OA-10.
The A-10 was intended to improve on the performance of the A-1 Skyraider and its poor firepower. The A-10 was designed around the 30mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon. Its airframe was designed for durability, with measures such as 1,200 pounds (540 kg) of titanium armor to protect the cockpit and aircraft systems, enabling it to absorb a significant amount of damage and continue flying. Its short takeoff and landing capability permits operation from airstrips close to the front lines, and its simple design enables maintenance with minimal facilities. The A-10 served in Operation Desert Shield, and Operation Desert Storm, the American intervention against Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, where the A-10 distinguished itself. The A-10 also participated in other conflicts such as Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada, the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq, and against ISIS in the Middle East.
