A third Sonic the Hedgehog movie is in the works and is set to begin filming in August. The film is scheduled to be released on December 20, 2024. The start date of production depends on whether a potential strike by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) takes place on July 1, which could halt all film and TV production. The script for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the same writers behind the previous two films. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the writers have hinted that elements from the Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog video games will be incorporated into the storyline. The inclusion of the character Shadow suggests a continuation of the franchise. Jim Carrey, who plays Eggman in the movies, has expressed a desire to return for future installments, as has Ben Schwartz, the voice of Sonic. In addition to the movie, a live-action Knuckles spin-off series is also in development for Paramount+. The first Sonic movie, released in 2020, was well-received, with the speaker comparing it to a Hallmark movie with its small-town boy meets blue hedgehog from space storyline. The speaker is enthusiastic about Sonic the Hedgehog 3 but acknowledges that its release is still far off in December 2024.
