I have a background in the maritime industry, deep sea cable repairs for the US government. I have worked in Quality control in the manufacturing sector, and I have worked on Nuclear Submarines at a repair facility. I have also had experience with precision testing of materials, parts, and tools in a temperature controlled environment with precision standards. This may have ultimately come down to material failure, but the things leading up to it were complacency and a disregard for safety and human life. It is my hope the passengers on board rest in peace, and we learn from their deaths in these tragic circumstances.

One final point of interest: The only thing that would have been important if the sub had not been crushed was having a way to recover the vehicle, in this case it didn't matter. However this would be a big deal otherwise if that was the actual failure point, and if Titanic Tourism is to continue I hope that they require that these vessels can be rescued by equipment owned by the company operating the submersible. They shouldn't just rely on others to save them.
