This is the 15th video in our series about ghost towns and locations associated with Tombstone. If you follow the links below you will see that several of the characters known in Tombstone lore are connected in some way to the Empire Ranch and Total wreck.

The Empire ranch was established in the 1860s by Edward Nye Fish.

In 1876 it sold for $2000 to Walter Vail.

The ranch expanded over the next 20 years with railroads, ranching and mining. The "Total Wreck" mine was discovered and added to the expansion of the ranch.

In 1928, the Chiricahua Ranches Company, which was incorporated by three Boice brothers, purchased the ranch.

In 1969 the ranch was sold to Gulf American Corporation (GAC) which planned to build a large residential community development.

In 1974 Anamax Mining Company purchased the Empire Ranch from GAC for its water rights and mineral potential.

In 1988 a series of land exchanges put the property into public ownership under the administration of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

In 2000, the U.S. Congress officially designated these 42,000 acres to be Las Cienegas National Conservation Area (LCNCA).
