Elon Musk & Tesla - part 2 - Autopilot
Teslas can drive themselves with the use of Lidar, or "Light Detection and Ranging." It's a technology that creates detailed 3D maps of the environment using lasers. It measures distances by emitting laser beams and calculating the time it takes for the light to bounce back. Think of how a submarine uses sonar under water. This information is vital for the car to understand its surroundings and accurately perceive objects such as vehicles, pedestrians, and obstacles.
In combination with other sensors like cameras and radar, the LiDAR data is processed using advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence, including neural networks. Neural networks are a type of artificial intelligence that mimic the human brain's decision-making process. They can recognize objects, track their movement, and predict their behavior based on the sensor inputs.
