“Love” means zero in the game of tennis, but the word appears to carry significant weight in the Challengers trailer starring Zendaya, The Crown’s Josh O’Connor and West Side Story’s Mike Faist which dropped last evening.
In the upcoming sports drama, Call Me By Your Name filmmaker Luca Guadagnino teams up with first-time screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes to tell the story of Tashi Donaldson (Zendaya), a once-promising tennis prodigy who encounters two intriguing men while on the circuit. They would be Art (Faist) and Patrick (O’Connor), two fellow pros whose dynamic is first invigorated, then complicated by adding Tashi to the mix. Case in point: “It’s nice to see you lit up about something—even if it is my girlfriend,” Patrick tells Art in the new footage, which is set to Rihanna’s “S&M.”
After an injury, Tashi marries and becomes a coach for Art. Given the Challengers trailer shows Zendaya in a bob haircut, there appears to be a time jump, after which Art and Patrick are forced to play against one another and reckon with their previous love affair. Sounds messy? That’s exactly as intended, as Guadagnino previously told IndieWire. He called the film’s three central characters “beautifully complex and really fucked-up people that I love very much,” adding, “it’s hyperkinetic.”

The film, which will land in theatres at the top of awards season, boasts high-profile pedigree beyond its stars and director. Amy Pascal (Little Women, The Post) is a producer alongside Guadagnino and Zendaya. And Oscar-winning Nine Inch Nails duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network, Guadagnino’s Bones and All) have scored the project.
Zendaya as a tennis star in a love triangle spanning decades? Sign us the eff up. Challengers, the latest from Italian director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name), offers up romance and intrigue, and allows our girl Z to do what she does best: shine bright at the dead center of the action (and attention). Here’s everything we know about the new movie.
Who’s in it?
Zendaya plays Tashi, Mike Faist (West Side Story) plays Art, and Josh O’Connor (The Crown) plays Patrick, who meet as teens on the tennis circuit. Per IMDb, other cast members include Jake Jensen and A. J. Lister.
What’s it about?
Per Vice’s i-D column, “Challengers follows Tashi, a player-turned-coach who, until recently, had shaped her husband, Art, into a perfect player too. But when Art winds up on a losing streak, he’s entered into a low-league challenger tournament to prove himself again. On the way, he is forced to play against Patrick, Tashi’s old boyfriend and their teenage best friend, catalysing a complex love triangle.” Complex and queer. We’re not certain how steamy it gets, but it’s rated R…so….

At least part of the movie was filmed in Boston, which must have been a nice break for Zendaya after mucking about in the sand for Dune.

Trailer’s here!
Set to Rihanna’s “S&M,” it gives us two minutes of competition and crackling chemistry. Look at her French tips! The 2010s vibes are strong.
When does the film come out?
Challengers hits theaters September 15, except in France, where it’s going straight to streaming on Amazon Prime Video. It’ll probably premiere at a film festival before then, but nothing has been announced.

If you simply cannot wait, there are, thankfully, a bunch of other tennis movies to tide you over, including Match Point, Wimbledon, The Battle of the Sexes, and King Richard.
